Changing the Face of Working from Home

Back in the 1980s’ if you said you worked from home, especially as an entrepreneur, people considered you “unemployed.” They would place you in the category of “inventor.” Today, if you work from home in your own business or remotely and aren’t bound by geography, you are an icon many people are envious of. Why? Because you have the flexibility to work on your own schedule, not a schedule that is handed down to you from a “higher power.”

Benefits of Becoming a Digital Nomad

If you’re reading this article, you’re most likely thinking about becoming a digital nomad or a digital nomad. Whether you ride one boat or the other, you’re most likely looking for more options to get you safely in and out of foreign countries as a digital nomad because you want to reap the benefits of being able to work remotely.

As a digital nomad, you most likely have sold most or almost all of the physical possessions that have held you in one place. I’ve heard many people talk about how freeing it is to sell your physical items when you have less worldly goods to haul around from place to place. In addition, you can travel almost any time of the year, which gives you the advantage of being in places in the off-season, so you can enjoy them without the touristy crowds and get to know the locals better.

If you don’t have a home base that you own, the pressures of keeping up with a home and mortgage are a wonderful gift that you have given yourself. No landscaping, mortgage payments, or home upkeep frees up a whole lot of time that you can now transfer into quality time. Whether this means spending more time with your kids, being outside more, or having more quality time with your significant other, not having to spend time on homeowner tasks is a welcoming element of becoming a digital nomad.

Having the Ability to Travel Easily to Foreign Countries

As a digital nomad, you’ll want to have the ability to travel back and forth from your country of origin to another country as easily and pain-free as possible! Unfortunately, this can entail lots of paperwork and research if you’re unsure who to contact or what type of passport to apply for as a digital nomad. Did you know that you can receive a special digital nomad visa? Read on to find out more about how you can apply for one and the benefits of having a digital nomad visa.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

With post-COVID economic losses still happening in tourism-dependent countries, and employers allowing their teams to operate remotely, they have found a niche type of Visa that is now being offered by countries.

A digital nomad visa is one that is geared towards those people who live outside their home country full time and either work remotely, freelance, or own their own business of some kind that allows for this lifestyle.

Who Can Apply for and Use a Digital Nomad Visa?

Because entering a country as a tourist usually doesn’t permit the traveler to work while living there, you’ll need to apply for a Visa if you’re staying in a country longer than they allow tourists to stay. Workers and students can apply for and use digital nomad visas, including your dependents. Many regions that offer digital nomad visas already have the infrastructure necessary to support remote workers, such as strong wifi as a selling feature. While the criteria for a digital nomad visa depends on the country issuing the Visa, some countries are even allowing companies to apply for these specialized visas for their remote workers!

And yes tourist visas (the visa waiver) specially prohibit you from working while you are in the country you are visiting (hence the need for a Digital Nomad Visa), how can countries enforce this? Technically, if you open your laptop on vacation and answer emails, you ARE working. The intent of the law is to keep foreigners from taking jobs away from locals. This is not what is happening when a digital nomad stays in the country for 6 months or more. They are working, yes, but not in any industry that exists in the country they are staying in.
